  • The Chiefs have covered in just one of the past 10 regular-season games.
  • The Chiefs are allowing a league-high 46.7 yards per possession to open the season.
  • The Chargers are averaging a league-high 47.9 yards per possession, but are 23rd in touchdown rate per drive (20%).
  • The Chargers are tied for the league lead with 10 red zone possessions, but have converted just three for touchdowns (31st).
  • After allowing opponents to convert a league-high 72.9% of their red zone possessions for touchdowns a year ago, the Chiefs have allowed opponents to convert 8-of-8 red zone possessions to touchdowns to open the season.
  • The Chargers have punted just twice to open the season and on 13.3% of their drives, the lowest marks in the league to open the season.
  • Patrick Mahomes is averaging 6.5 more yards per pass attempt under pressure (14.8 Y/A) than when kept clean (8.3 Y/A), the largest difference in the league.
  • With 338 passing yards last week, Justin Herbert registered his 10th 300-yard passing game, tied with Mahomes and Kurt Warner for the most through the first 17 starts of a career.
  • 47.8% of the yardage gained against the Chargers has come via rushing, the highest rate in the league through two weeks.
  • The Chiefs are at 43.1%, 31st in the league ahead of only Los Angeles.

Bust = down-week production for that player’s standards

Quarterback

Patrick Mahomes: Mahomes has thrown three touchdowns in each of the opening two weeks with 33.3 and 24.0 fantasy points against the Browns and Ravens.

Brandon Staley has brought over his high-safety approach from the Rams to the Chargers as opposing quarterbacks have just a 6.3 aDOT (24th) through two weeks and have completed just 1-of-3 passes over 15 yards downfield against them in two games. Mahomes will surely throw more than three passes downfield but this will be something to monitor throughout the season as this defensive scheme will invite you to run with light boxes like Washington and Dallas have to start the year.

Mahomes had the second-most pass attempts against two-high safeties in 2020. He connected on 77.3% of those passes for 8.2 Y/A, but was held to a 4.7% touchdown rate on those attempts as opposed to a 7.0% touchdown rate against other looks. Staley and the Chargers will surely do their best to try and make Mahomes work underneath, but Mahomes is a locked-in QB1 option.
