After a 2-3 start to the 2024 NFL season, the Jets fired coach Robert Saleh.
Why was Robert Saleh fired?
The Jets decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh came after the team's underwhelming performance to start the season and following a pair of losses that included a 23-17 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings in London.
I discussed this at length on the Sharp Football Analysis YouTube channel, but the reasons for the decision were pretty clear.
Despite coming into the season with high expectations, particularly due to the presence of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets struggled to find consistency on both sides of the ball.
According to reporting by The Athletic, owner Woody Johnson “felt the Jets have a roster that’s ready to compete now and felt compelled to make a move now before it was too late.”
The Athletic also reported that “multiple players and coaches” said the vibes were “off” in the locker room following the Jets' loss to the Vikings in London.
“Saleh was losing support and some — especially players on defense — were frustrated with the lack of accountability taking place as the offense kept making the same mistakes they’ve been making for the last few years and wasting another stellar defensive effort.”
CBS Sports reports Saleh was considering firing OC Nathaniel Hackett before he was fired on Tuesday, suggesting a power struggle that was ultimately won by Hackett and, more likely and more importantly, Rodgers.

Saleh produced a 20-36 record with the Jets.
He didn't have a good quarterback situation for most of his tenure.
The weakness of his quarterbacks was factored into betting lines, however, and the Jets underperformed against those expectations.
The team covered the spread in just 22 of 56 games (40%) with Saleh as head coach.
That is the #2 worst rate in the NFL since the start of Saleh's tenure. The Jets rank ahead of just the Carolina Panthers, who have fired multiple coaches since 2021.
Reportedly blindsided by the news of being fired, Saleh had to be escorted out of the building by security.
Just talked to Robert Saleh who said was blindsided by Woody Johnson walking to his office and letting him go. Certainly disappointed he wasn’t going to be given the opportunity to get things going with what he said is a very good roster
