It seemed like the 2020 NFL season would never occur, but we're headed to Week 2 and despite some oddities, one of the things that has remained a constant is injuries affecting teams with playoff aspirations. We've already seen big names like Le'Veon Bell, Richard Sherman, and Michael Thomas suffer injuries and it's only been one week.
Here's a rundown of all the guys currently listed on practice reports, as well as projected starters who are currently off the roster nursing long-term ailments:
Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1:00 PM

Injured Reserve: CB Eli Apple, ankle.
- A weak Carolina pass rush gets even worse with both Short and Gross-Matos out. The Panthers produced a league-low 6.7% pressure rate last week and now are without Short, who ranked 25th among DL in pressure rate, in his last healthy season in 2018. In addition, Short ranked 14th in run defense grade in 2018, according to PFF. The Panthers were hopeful he’d stabilize the worst DVOA run defense in the NFL last season, so this is a big blow. After one week, Carolina ranks 29th in run defense. The backup to Short is Zach Kerr, who received a PFF run defense grade of 59.6 and produced 0 pressures on 24 snaps last week. Tom Brady, Ronald Jones, and that Tampa offense are licking their chops.

Injured Reserve: CB Artie Burns, knee.
- Not much needs to be said about the brilliance of Mack. He produced 6 pressures alone last week against Detroit, 33% of the Bears total pressures. Mack’s backup is a fifth-round rookie from Tulsa, Trevis Gipson, who produced 0 pressures in his debut last week. Quinn missed last week so his addition would be a bonus. Against a bad Giants OL and a turnover-prone QB like Daniel Jones, the Bears pass rush fully healthy could be the difference the Bears need to win Sunday.
Minnesota Vikings at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 PM
Vikings

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cameron Dantzler
|
CB | Rib | DNP | DNP | DNP | Out |
Injured Reserve: DE Danielle Hunter, undisclosed.
PUP: LB Ben Gedeon, undisclosed.
- An already poor Vikings cornerback situation gets even worse this week with the loss of third-round rookie starter Cameron Dantzler. Aaron Rodgers torched this secondary last week, including Dantzler, but he did at least receive the highest coverage grade by PFF last week. His backup is Holton Hill, who was picked on to the tune of 11 targets on only 35 coverage snaps last week. He allowed 7 receptions for 87 yards and a 118 QB rating in coverage. Hill graded out as the 93rd rated CB last week out of 95 CBs. Philip Rivers is salivating.

|
WR | Toe | (-) | LP | DNP | Questionable |
Injured Reserve: TE Trey Burton, calf; RB Marlon Mack, Achilles.
- The Colts WR and TE groups look battered. Doyle has been declared out and his backup Mo Allie-Cox will have to step up. The Colts ran 11 personnel on 81% of plays last week, so with Doyle out expect more 3 WR sets. The problem is that two of the Colts top 4 WRs, Pascal and Pittman, were limited all week and are listed as Questionable. T.Y. Hilton and Parris Campbell should see plenty of targets on Sunday.

- The depth along the Atlanta DL takes a hit with two linemen out, Marlon Davidson and Charles Harris, along with a third, Deadrin Senat, limited all week. The Dallas offense could wear down this defensive front.

Tyron Smith
|
T | Neck | (-) | DNP | DNP | Questionable |
Injured Reserve: T La’el Collins, hip; TE Blake Jarwin, knee; LB Sean Lee, pelvis; LB Leighton Vander Esch, clavicle.
- Major injuries along the Cowboys OL. RT La’el Collins is already on IR but the bigger concern is on the left side with LT Tyron Smith Questionable. Smith is consistently one of the best LT in the NFL and having both bookend tackles out is a concern. Smith’s backup is undrafted rookie FA Terence Steele out of Texas Tech. This could be a major issue against ATL DE’s Dante Fowler and Takk Mckinley who pressured Russell Wilson nine times last week.
- LB is also a possible concern for the Cowboys with both Sean Lee and Leighton Vander Esch both out this week. Backup Joe Thomas stepped in nicely during the game last week with 3 tackles, no missed tackles along with 2 rush stops. Thomas showed himself well last year, finishing with higher pass coverage and run defensive grades, according to PFF, than both Lee and Vander Esch. Depth could be a concern but otherwise, Dallas could be ok.

Dee Ford
|
DL | Neck | (-) | DNP | DNP | Questionable |
Injured Reserve: WR Deebo Samuel, foot; WR Jalen Hurd, knee; CB Richard Sherman, calf.
PUP: C Weston Richburg, knee.
- The SF injury report is loaded with CB injuries. Richard Sherman was placed on IR and Jason Verrett is listed as out. Ahkello Witherspoon has a concussion but will play. K’waun Williams plays almost exclusively in the slot and I’d expect this to continue Sunday. This leaves third-year CB Emmanuel Moseley, Witherspoon, Ken Webster, and Dontae Johnson as healthy CBs on the outside in this game. Moseley ranked 46th in QB rating allowed last year and Witherspoon 101st at CB. Moseley was picked on by Kyler Murray last week, allowing 7 receptions for 61 yards on 8 targets to DeAndre Hopkins alone. Luckily the Jets are dealing with their own WR issues so this is not the week where the secondary could be exploited.
- On offense, the Niners received a huge blow with the loss to TE George Kittle to go along with the mash unit at WR. Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd, and Richie James are all on IR. The big drop off from Kittle to backup Ross Dwelley will really be felt with the run blocking. Kittle was graded as a top 6 run blocker among TEs in 2018 and 2019 while Dwelley rated at 49th among TEs last season. With all of these injuries look for the Niners to run more and target RBs out of the backfield to compensate.

Tarell Basham
|
LB | Hip | (-) | LP | LP | Questionable |
Injured Reserve: RB Le’Veon Bell, hamstring; WR Denzel Mims, hamstring; LB Patrick Onwuasor, knee.
- Two areas of concern for the Jets are at WR and LB. Rookie Denzel Mims is on IR and Sam Darnold’s favorite WR Jamison Crowder has been declared out. Crowder was targeted last week on 12 of Darnold’s 32 attempts and accounted for 53% of Darnold’s passing yards with 115. Breshad Perriman, Chris Hogan, and Braxton Berrios are going to be Darnold’s main targets at WR Sunday.
- At LB, Avery Williamson and Tarell Basham, are questionable. Williamson missed all of last season as well as last week’s game against Buffalo, but in 2018 was graded as one of the best run defenders in the NFL at LB. If he can play Sunday it would be a big boost against a San Francisco team that will most likely focus on the run game with all of their injuries at WR and TE. Basham was solid last week, leading the Jets in pressures with three. His backup is Frankie Luvu who received only 69 snaps last year after 443 in 2018. On those snaps, he has generated a good pressure rate of 11.6%.

- The Eagles are relatively healthy. It’s a miracle! The Eagles will need all of the DL help they can get so getting at least two of the three linemen listed above is crucial against the Rams high powered offense.

Injured Reserve: FB Nick Bawden, undisclosed; CB Justin Coleman, hamstring.
- The Lions might have the worst injury report in the NFL this week. They are decimated in the secondary with slot CB Justin Coleman on IR, No.1 corner Desmond Trufant out, and Darryl Roberts Questionable. The good news is first-round pick Jeffrey Okudah will be back but that slot corner position could be an issue as Roberts is the backup in that spot. In any event, Rodgers will be targeting this secondary all day.
- On the OL, the Lions will be missing starting guard Joe Dahl and Tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai is Questionable. Dahl was graded as the 23rd best pass blocking guard last year by PFF, 27th overall, so he will be missed. Dahl’s backup is Logan Stenberg, a fourth-round rookie from Kentucky.

- Losing DT Kenny Clark is a big blow for GB. Clark was graded by PFF as the 13th best DL last year, fourth in pass rush grade. He generated 62 pressures and eight sacks last season. In addition, depth could be an issue as his backup Montravius Adams is Questionable as well. This should negate the loss of Dahl for the Lions at guard.

Injured Reserve: G Jon Feliciano, pectoral; CB Josh Norman, hamstring.
- Buffalo will be down two starting linebackers with Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano as well as backup Del’Shawn Phillips out. They will be left with starter A.J. Klein along with backups Tyrel Dodson and Tyler Matakevich as the only truly healthy linebackers. Milano is a stud in coverage, grading as fourth-best among all LBs last season and allowing only 6.6 yards per reception while in coverage. Edmunds is much better at run defense than coverage, grading 24th in run defense among LBs last season. Dodson did not play last season and Matakevich has only played 158 snaps in five seasons. This is music to the ears of TE Mike Gisecki and potentially RB Matt Brieda if he runs some routes out of the backfield.

- If the Dolphins want to be able to move the ball on this stout Buffalo defense, they will need to have DeVante Parker in the lineup. If he is out that thrusts Preston Williams into the No. 1 role and the unenviable task of facing Tre’Davious White.

- The Jags defense catches a break with WR A.J. Brown being out. That leaves Corey Davis as the No. 1 reciever. With the way rookie cornerback C.J. Henderson played at CB last week, slot receiver Adam Humphries looks to be the biggest beneficiary of Brown’s absence.

Fourth-round rookie Kevin Dotson and Matt Feiler take over. Dotson is unproven but Feiler was excellent at tackle last year with a top 25 PFF pass-blocking grade.
