2021 NFL Week 4 Injury Report

As we dive head-first into Week 4, it is worth noting that this is the first week players will be eligible to return from the Injured Reserve this season. In fact, Tavon Austin was activated from the IR and played on Thursday night for the Jaguars.

Make sure to stay on top of all the Injured Reserve and reserve/COVID-19 lists with our trackers. And check out below for information and analysis for every game this weekend:

– Washington’s offense has struggled staying on the field this year, ranking dead last in third down percentage this year. However, it looks like Curtis Samuel is on track to make his 2021 debut after spending the first three weeks of the season on the IR.

Samuel was a valuable weapon for the Panthers last year, catching 28 passes on third down and converting 19 third downs through the air and on the ground. Antonio Gibson is also expected to play after missing Thursday’s practice with a shin injury.

– Quarterback has been a hot topic of debate in the Windy City and Matt Nagy refusing to name a starter on Friday will only stoke those flames. The only thing we know is Nick Foles has been eliminated from contention.

Maybe this will come down to how Andy Dalton’s knee feels this weekend. Justin Fields was a full-go in practice this week so the health of his thumb shouldn’t be an issue. However, Dalton hasn’t had a full practice in two weeks and his return could signify the team is desperate to beat the 0-3 Lions. The Lions pass defense has been porous this year, allowing 8.8 net yards per pass attempt.

– Defensively, the Panthers placed rookie Jaycee Horn on the IR after he broke his foot on Thursday night. Carolina made a move, acquiring C.J. Henderson in a trade with the Jaguars. Henderson struggled as a rookie and was inactive last week due to a groin injury.

– One other thing to monitor is the rest difference between these two teams. The Panthers are coming off 10 days of rest after playing on Thursday Night Football, but the Cowboys have a short week after their win over the Eagles on Monday.

Greg Newsome’s injury could open the door for Greedy Williams, who has played just 16 defensive snaps this season.

It’s been a steep fall from grace for Williams, who started 12 games as a rookie in 2019 after being drafted in the second round. A nagging injury kept him out of the entire 2020 season and when he finally returned in 2021, Newsome was occupying his spot.

Despite his limited playing time, Williams has already been targeted four times in 2021, allowing one catch for 19 yards. He draws a tough matchup this week against the Vikings' vaunted receiving corps.

– The Vikings are still awaiting the verdict on Dalvin Cook, who missed last week with an ankle injury and remains “questionable.” However, it seems like things are trending in the right direction; Cook was limited in every practice this week after not participating prior to Week 3.

If he is out again, Alexander Mattison proved to be more than capable of shouldering the load, totaling 171 yards from scrimmage on 32 touches.

Christian Darrisaw practice in full all week, but the Vikings don't seem eager to start the rookie. Despite Rashod Hill's struggles at left tackle, Mike Zimmer doesn't want to rush the first-round pick.

McLeod will pair with Anthony Harris to give the Eagles a pair of ball-hawking safeties to play over the top. His return couldn't come at a better time with K'Von Wallace going on the IR with a separated shoulder.

Andre Dillard will start at left tackle for the second-straight week after Jordan Mailata sprained his knee in practice. The 2019 first-round pick played well against Dallas on Monday night, ranking as Pro Football Focus's 11th-best tackle of the week.

– With Jon Feliciano sidelined, Ike Boettger could get the start at guard after playing sparingly in the first three weeks of the season. Boettger did make 10 starts for the Bills at left guard last year, allowing zero sacks.

Sony Michel carried the load last week, picking up 79 yards from scrimmage on 20 carries and four catches.

On the flip side, the Arizona Cardinals defense has struggled up front, allowing 5.4 yards per carry all season.

– Los Angeles will also be without linebacker Justin Hollins, who was added to the IR this week. Hollins notched a pair of sacks in Week 1 and will be replaced by 2020 third-round pick Terrell Lewis. Lewis had a quarterback hit in Week 3 and had two sacks in his rookie season.

Dee Eskridge seemed to be on-track to return this week, but that will have to be delayed as he works his way through concussion protocol. However, Tyler Lockett's full participation in Friday's practice is a good sign he will be ready to play come Sunday.

– Right tackle Brandon Shell will miss a second-straight week and Cedric Ogbuehi is a possibility to start in his spot, provided he is activated from the IR. Jamarco Jones and Jake Curhan split time at right tackle last week, playing 27 and 26 snaps, respectively.

Arik Armstead could be a horrifying matchup for whoever plays right tackle; he has 16 quarterback pressures so far this season.

Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard are the two other tight ends on the roster and both have extensive experience. However, Gronkowski was experiencing a career revitalization this year, ranking third among qualified tight ends in yards per route run.

Giovani Bernard is ruled out for Sunday, which could lead to more opportunities in the passing game for Ronald Jones. Jones averaged 30 catches per season over the past two years, but has just one reception through three weeks.
