- Miami was 4-1 (5-0 ATS) following a loss under Brian Flores a year ago.
- Through two weeks, Derek Carr is tied with Tom Brady for the league lead in completions of 20-plus yards (12).
- Carr's 817 passing yards are the most through two games in franchise history. The previous high was 670 passing yards by Carson Palmer in 2012. Carr's previous high himself through two games was 618 yards in 2016.
- Carr has now thrown for 300 yards in four straight games dating back to last season, the longest streak in the league and longest streak for the franchise since Rich Gannon went six straight games in 2002.
- The Raiders have produced 96.6 rushing and receiving points per game to open the season, second in the league behind Arizona (98.4).
Quarterback
Derek Carr: Carr suffered an ankle injury late in the game last week, but stayed in to close the game. Early week reports are that he avoided a major injury and will be active Sunday, but monitor the situation over the course of the week as he may miss some practice time.
If Carr is good to go, he has started the year out hot against the Baltimore and Pittsburgh pass defenses. Both units suffered some key injuries prior to and in-game each week, but we now have a large sample dating back to last season in which Carr has been effective.
In 2020, Carr’s 7.9 yards per attempt were a career-high as his 5.2% touchdown rate was his highest rate in a season since 2015. Carr’s depth of target (8.5 yards) significantly spiked from his 6.9-yard aDOT in 2019 and 7.1-yard mark in 2018. Carr closed the season with five QB1 scoring weeks over his final seven games and has now opened the year with two this season.
One of those came against this Miami defense in Week 16 when threw for 336 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score for a QB9 (23.2) scoring week. Miami has been good once again this season to start and they have been sending pressure, as always. Miami is allowing 6.4 yards per pass attempt (fifth) and they have blitzed 40.8% of the time (second).
Carr has been excellent to open against pressure, averaging 9.7 Y/A pressured through two games and he has averaged 12.0 Y/A against the blitz to open the season. It’s not an objectively glowing matchup and Carr is dealing with an ankle issue, but his play dating back to last season regardless of matchup should have Carr in consideration as top-15 option.
