The first game of the 2022 NFL season is right around the corner. One factor that requires consideration is the extra game added to the schedule: one extra waiver run, same FAAB budget. Last year was the first year with the extra game and in combination with some significant early injuries, some managers were on the FAAB poverty line with multiple weeks remaining.

It seems elementary; however, awareness of league settings is the first early edge to gain on the competition. Starting roster requirements and the scoring system should alter which players to target more aggressively and how many spots should be allotted to running back stashes.

At no point should a fantasy manager have three quarterbacks rostered in a single quarterback league, and if a top-six quarterback is drafted, a second quarterback is not required except for bye weeks. Save roster spots for running backs and rookie wide receivers that have an increased role as the season moves on.

Read the rules, many of the national contests do not require lineups to be set until Sunday morning of Week 1 as drafts are still occurring after the Thursday night game. This means that managers will know exactly how many points the Bills/Rams players will have scored before deciding whether to start or sit these players.

FFPC/NFC/FFWC have weekend waivers for Week 1 in addition to the preseason waiver run allowing the addition of a second kicker or DST Sunday if not wanting to use the Thursday night options.

KNOW THE RULES AND USE THEM TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Below is a look at the 2021 top 10 players added in at least 150 FPC leagues in terms of median winning bids and subsequent player performance. For players that were passed on in multiple leagues, it is likely best to keep your powder dry and let other managers overbid.

As training camp injuries were minimal this offseason, substantial changes to depths charts did not occur. Better opportunities to spend on players with increased roles will occur throughout the year.

The pre-season waiver targets will focus on mid-stake and high-stake league availability. The following weeks will have targets for recreational leagues and deep-benched high stakes leagues. Recommendations are based on a budget of 1000 FAAB.
