Super Bowl Preview

Chiefs vs. Eagles: Betting Tips, Breakdown & Prediction

The Chiefs and Eagles have arguably been the best teams in the NFL since October with one loss each by each team's starters. They just overcame the last teams (Commanders and Bills) to beat them, and now they're on a collision course in New Orleans in Super Bowl LIX.

The Chiefs open as a 2-point favorite with a total of 49.5 points at Bet365, but that was changed minutes after a line of Chiefs -1.5. You can expect more subtle line movement in the coming days as this figures to be a tightly contested Super Bowl. The rest of our Super Bowl preview will focus on key headlines.

Chiefs vs. Eagles Super Bowl LIX Preview: Main Storylines

Super Bowl LIX will have many of the game's brightest stars on display in Patrick Mahomes, Saquon Barkley, Travis Kelce, A.J. Brown, Jalen Carter, Chris Jones, and more. But who will shine the brightest under the big lights?

Saquon Barkley's Night?

Who says a running back can't carry a team to a Super Bowl championship anymore? February 9th could be Saquon Barkley's night as it is his 28th birthday, and he will be a favorite to win Super Bowl MVP, something no running back has done since Terrell Davis had a great night to upset Green Bay for the 1997 Broncos. We heard this story last year with Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers, and the Chiefs set the tone early by forcing a McCaffrey fumble on the opening drive and holding him under 100 rushing yards.

But Barkley behind this offensive line is unbelievable. He started the NFC title game with a 60-yard touchdown run on the opening snap before scoring three touchdowns in the game. It's really that line combined with Barkley's skills that separate him from any other running back going to a team in free agency. But he'll get to prove his worth on the big stage against a run defense that looked shaky at times against James Cook, who probably didn't get enough touches for the Bills.

Jalen Hurts Revenge Game?

A lot of people will say Hurts arguably outplayed Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl 57, but it was his second quarter fumble on an unforced error that stands out as his big mistake as it was returned for a touchdown. But Hurts played well on the big stage, and he'll look to become the first quarterback in the salary cap era to win a Super Bowl after losing his first opportunity.

Hurts was supposed to be limited by a knee injury suffered against the Rams, but he looked healthy and as good as he has all season in Sunday's win where he led the Eagles to 55 points, a Conference Championship Game record. Hurts is 9-0 this season when he passes for 200 yards, so if he's playing well, the Eagles become nearly impossible to beat with the strength of Barkley, the offensive line, and that great defense.

Also, notice how the Chiefs kept stopping Josh Allen on the Tush Push and similar runs. Jalen Hurts is the master of that with Philly. They won't mess those plays up.

Patrick Mahomes vs. Vic Fangio

This becomes the huge matchup on the other side as Patrick Mahomes will try to solve Vic Fangio's No. 1 defense. Mahomes has been stellar in his career against top-ranked defenses, and Fangio held him to 14 points in Germany last year with the Dolphins. Fangio also played against Mahomes as head coach of the Broncos early in his career, and the Broncos did a respectable job of keeping the score lower even if they weren't winning the games.

But Fangio will have two weeks to prepare for an Andy Reid offense that always has some new wrinkles up its sleeve. Who knew JuJu Smith-Schuster would have 60 yards in the AFC title game, or that Kelce would do so little again, or that the RPO was a big factor in Kansas City's success? The Chiefs also have some offensive line issues to cover up with guard Joe Thuney playing left tackle, leaving the Chiefs a little vulnerable at guard against a front that will have Jalen Carter coming after Mahomes.

It should be a great matchup.

Chiefs vs. Eagles Preview: Final Thoughts

It should be an exciting matchup that again comes down to the fourth quarter. Saquon Barkley and Patrick Mahomes will be the most bet players to win Super Bowl MVP, but don't forget about Jalen Hurts with his sneak touchdowns and a 300-yard passing game two years ago. He'll have a lot to prove in this rematch, but it should be an incredible night with history on the line for Kansas City's three-peat.
